G7 technology ministers at a meeting in Italy pledged to push for "общего видения и цели безопасного, надежного и заслуживающего доверия" artificial intelligence. They said, however, that the specific framework for regulating AI may vary from country to country.
Here's What We Know
"We are committed to achieving an appropriate balance between fostering innovation and the need for appropriate guardrails" said in a statement from the G7 at the end of the two-day talks.
The countries of the association said there are ongoing efforts to develop and strengthen interoperability between AI governance systems. But noted that approaches and policy tools may differ between G7 members.
The announcement came a couple of days after the European Union finally approved strict rules to regulate AI, including systems like ChatGPT.
Some G7 countries like the US and the UK favour a softer framework, relying on self-regulation and voluntary adherence by tech giants to supervisory systems.
"Our approach to the regulation of artificial intelligence is different from that of the EU. We do not only want to focus on risks, but also promote innovation and avoid hindering it" UK Technology Minister Michelle Donelan said.
