The US Air Force has cancelled its already problematic plan to integrate high-energy laser weapons on the AC-130J Ghostrider.
Here's What We Know
A spokesperson for the US Air Force Special Operations Command explained that the airborne high-energy laser (AHEL) experienced technical problems during recent ground tests.
It is noted that certain difficulties led to the weapon's failure to perform in flight tests, thereby reducing hopes for success. The spokesperson did not specifically disclose the technical problems, but said that AHEL is still capable of performing significant high-powered work.
It is understood that no one is cancelling the entire AHEL programme, but only reassessing plans for the weapon system.
