Microsoft requires AI computers to have a separate Copilot key - Intel
Microsoft
Microsoft's new artificial intelligence computers (AI PCs) will have to have a separate Copilot key on the keyboard, according to Intel. This is one of the tech giant's requirements for OEMs to build AI PCs with built-in AI-based features in Windows.
Here's What We Know
Apart from the Copilot key, Microsoft wants AI PCs to be equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU), the latest CPUs and GPUs, and provide access to the Copilot AI assistant. According to Intel, some recently released laptops such as the Asus ROG Zephyrus with the new Intel Core Ultra chips are technically not AI PCs by Microsoft's definition due to the lack of a key.
"Our joint aligned definition, Intel and Microsoft, we’ve aligned on Core Ultra, Copilot, and Copilot key" Intel spokesperson Todd Lewellen explained.
AI PC requirements
It's still unclear what benefits OEMs will receive for complying with Microsoft's AI PC requirements. The company has not commented on its plans in this area.
In parallel, Intel is expanding its programme to attract developers to create applications using AI features and optimise hardware for AI PCs. Qualcomm with Windows on Arm and Google with optimised Chrome are entering the race this year.
Microsoft will hold an AI and Surface event on 20 May to talk about its vision for AI hardware and software.
