The administration of US President Joe Biden has unveiled sweeping guidelines for the safe and responsible use of artificial intelligence in federal agencies. Vice President Kamala Harris announced the mandatory requirements developed by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).

Here's What We Know

First, by December 1, agencies must ensure that the AI systems they use do not threaten the safety and rights of Americans. This applies to areas related to elections, infrastructure, law enforcement, education, and hiring. Otherwise, the use of such systems will be prohibited.

Second, agencies are required to publicly publish lists of AI systems in use, risk assessments and ways to minimise them. Where possible, codes, models and data must be disclosed.

Third, each agency will appoint a chief AI specialist to oversee the implementation of these technologies. Special councils are expected to be in place by 27 May.

According to OMB Director Shalanda Young, smart use of AI will allow government agencies to improve service quality, speed up the resolution of social problems, and ensure equal opportunity.

The policy was developed with input from experts from the public and private sectors, as well as civil rights leaders.

The measures adopted will be part of an effort to regulate AI along with consumer protection laws already enacted in some states.
