New Android 15 feature could improve battery life
The new version of the Android 15 operating system will include a feature that can significantly increase your phone's runtime from a single battery charge.
Here's What We Know
Our colleague at Android Authority spotted lines referring to a new Adaptive Timeout option in Android 15 Developer Preview 2. It automatically switches off your phone's screen when you're not using it. This can significantly extend your battery life, especially if you normally use your phone with the screen brightness at maximum brightness. This feature also provides added security by preventing unwanted browsing on your phone's screen when you're not using it.
Currently, you can set your Android phone's screen timeout to 15 seconds or up to 30 minutes. You can also set your phone to self-lock immediately after a screen timeout or after a pre-defined delay ranging from 5 seconds to 30 minutes. Some phones have a "Screen Attention" feature that ensures the screen doesn't switch off while you're looking at it.
According to Mishaal Rahman, the author of the leak who discovered the feature in Android 15 Developer Preview 2, the feature will only be available on Google Pixel phones running Android 15. However, manufacturers of other phones can also implement this feature in their devices. For now, Android 15 is still under development and the new OS is expected to be unveiled closer to autumn.
