Western Digital is preparing to release the first 4TB SD card in 2025
Storage company Western Digital has announced plans to launch the world's first 4TB SD card next year. The new product will be marketed under the SanDisk brand and is aimed at "demanding media and entertainment workflows" such as shooting high-quality video at high frame rates.
Here's What We Know
Western Digital's 4TB SanDisk Extreme Pro SDUC SD card will use the Ultra High Speed-1 (UHS-1) interface, meaning it will support a minimum speed of 10MB/s and a maximum data transfer rate of 104MB/s when operating in UHS104 (SDR104) mode. The card will support a minimum sequential write speed of 30MB/s. With these specifications, the new SD card will be able to support video formats that require large amounts of storage, such as 8K. This explains why Western Digital will unveil the new product for the first time at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) annual event for broadcast and media professionals, which began on 13 April, in Las Vegas.
Western Digital is expected to provide more information about the SD card at the NAB Show 2024 event, which runs from 13 to 17 April. The price of the SD card has not yet been announced. For example, the 1TB SanDisk Extreme Pro SDXC UHS-I SDXC UHS-I card currently has a manufacturer's recommended retail price of $140. Given its advanced features and target audience of professional content creators, the offering is likely to command a premium pricing.
