Studio Ghibli to receive the Palme d'Or at Cannes: for the first time in history, the award will be given to a film studio
Even people who don't watch anime know Studio Ghibli. Hayao Miyazaki and his team were able to create real magic in their works that instantly attracts the attention of viewers. Just think of such anime as My Neighbour Totoro, The Travelling Castle, or Spirited Away. And now the studio will receive one of the most prestigious film awards.
Here's What We Know
The 77th Cannes Film Festival will run from 14 to 25 May. The Palme d'Or, one of the most prestigious film awards, will be presented at the festival. And for the first time, Cannes will present the award to a company rather than an individual.
Iris Knobloch, President of the Cannes Film Festival, and Thierry Fremaux, Delegate General, described the studio's films as "filling our imaginations with rich, colourful universes and sensitive, engaging narratives. Thanks to Ghibli, Japanese animation is one of the great adventures of cinephilia, between tradition and modernity.
Ghibli was founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. Over the past 40 years, the studio has "achieved what seemed impossible: to independently produce true masterpieces and conquer the mass market," the festival notes.
