FBI warns of possible Chinese cyberattacks on US infrastructure
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has made alarming predictions about possible cyberattacks on the country's infrastructure by China.
Here's What We Know
The head of the FBI, Christopher Wray, has issued a warning of new attacks, claiming that the Chinese hacker group Volt Typhoon is currently in position to launch an attack.
According to Ray, the systems that have been infected by the Volt Typhoon group are used to control critical infrastructure such as water, energy and telecommunications. He emphasised that previous attacks linked to Chinese hacker groups could have been preparatory actions for a large-scale attack.
In addition, Ray pointed to the possibility of using cyberattacks as a means of influencing the political situation in the United States, the US elections and reactions to external events, including the elections in Taiwan.
China's Assistant Foreign Minister denied his country's connection to the Volt Typhoon group, recognising it as a criminal organisation, but some research from well-known companies such as Microsoft and Google has revealed links between the group and the Chinese state.
