European Commission may approve NFC access for iPhone

The European Union Commission has announced that it has approved changes to Apple's policy on the use of the NFC chip on the iPhone.

Here's What We Know

The decision, which will be officially announced in the coming weeks via Reuters, is aimed at increasing diversity and competition in the contactless payment market.

The new rules will allow third-party apps to become the default contactless payment apps that appear when you double-click the side button or hold the phone up to a payment terminal. However, these changes only apply to apps available within the EU.

Until now, Apple has strictly limited access to the NFC chip on the iPhone, citing security and privacy concerns. This has allowed Apple Pay to establish a timely dominant position in contactless payments for iPhone users.
