The latest YouTube update may be problematic for older and affordable Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets.
Here's What We Know
Google has announced the use of a new AV1 decoder known as "libdav1d" to play videos on Android devices running OS 12 or later.
Most devices do not have hardware support for AV1 decoding and use a software decoder, which can lead to performance and battery consumption issues. Some users have already reported experiencing frame skipping and performance issues after installing the update.
By default, YouTube uses the old "libgav1" decoder, and only uses the new "libdav1d" decoder after a user request. Many users have not yet received the Google Play system update.
