AMD signs $3bn deal with Samsung for key memory chips for AI chips
AMD has signed a $3 billion deal with Samsung to supply critical parts that will be used in their new artificial intelligence chips.
Here's What We Know
The deal will see AMD supply HBM3E memory chips for their new chips, including the MI350, which is designed for servers.
Not only will Samsung be confidently supplying its memory chips to AMD, but it is also a key supplier to other manufacturers in the industry, such as NVIDIA. In addition to the AMD contract, Samsung has also received an order for 12-layer HBM3E chips from NVIDIA.
Samsung's HBM3E chips offer unique performance, achieving bandwidths of up to 1280GB/s and 36GB of capacity, making them an ideal choice for AI chips where speed and power are critical parameters.
The agreement with Samsung is separate from the wafer production agreement, but it opens up opportunities for further collaboration between AMD and Samsung Foundry in the future.
AMD's MI350, with support for Samsung's new memory chips, is expected to hit the market in the second half of this year, competing with AI chips from NVIDIA.
