DJI drones may be banned in the US
Popular DJI drones may become unavailable for use in the United States due to a recently proposed bill that has already passed a US House of Representatives committee.
Here's What We Know
According to a report by The New York Times, the bill, titled the PDA Drone Countermeasures Act, received unanimous support from the Energy and Commerce Committee last month. The bill is expected to go to the House of Representatives for a vote in the next two months.
One of the bill's sponsors, Representative Elise Stefanik, argues that DJI poses a potential national security risk due to the company's ties to the Chinese government.
However, the decision also has economic motives: it is supported in order to stimulate competition in the drone industry in the US, where DJI has a significant market share.
This initiative is part of a general trend towards tighter control over Chinese technology in the US. Following the bill to potentially ban TikTok signed by President Biden and other actions against Chinese companies, the decision on DJI has important national security and economic implications.
DJI representatives are trying to influence the situation by actively refuting the accusations and cooperating with lobbyists, but the company's future in the US market remains uncertain.
