La Repubblica: Italy wants to transfer an additional battery of SAMP/T SAMs to Ukraine
The Italian government plans to transfer an additional battery of the SAMP/T surface-to-air missile system to Ukraine.
Here's What We Know
The information was shared by La Repubblica. If the Italian parliament approves the supply of SAMs, the battery will be included in the 9th military aid package along with artillery shells. The arms package may be announced before the G7 summit, which will be held from 19 to 21 May. By the way, Italy earlier took its SAMP/T air defence system from Slovakia. It is possible that it will be sent to Ukraine.
Flashback
SAMP/T is an air defence system for surface-to-air missiles. It was developed by the European consortium Eurosam (a joint venture of MBDA Italy, MBDA France and Thales). The complex is designed for air defence of mechanised units, as well as air cover of important facilities from massive attacks. The SAM is capable of destroying air targets at an altitude of up to 25 kilometres and at a distance of up to 100 kilometres. The AFU currently has one SAMP/T battery in service. It was given to Ukraine by Italy together with France.
