Google Play introduces new feature to identify official government apps

Google Play is rolling out a new feature widely to help users easily identify official government apps. A new "Government" icon with a picture of a building will appear in the main app feed, in search results, and on app pages.

Here's What We Know

The icon will be prominently placed next to the app's rating. When you click on the icon, a brief explanation will appear, "Official Government - Play confirms that this app is associated with a government structure."

Example of labelling and searching for an official government app

At the start of the feature, the designation will appear on official state and federal apps in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, the UK and the US.

Google Play has been testing this feature for several months and initially more than 3,000 government apps received the badge. Google has been actively working with these governments and their developers. Google has introduced special rules - official entities and agencies must use government email when setting up their accounts. More sensitive applications that involve voting or ID verification require additional verification before approval.
