7 years of OS updates, 120Hz display and $499 price: all Google Pixel 8a specs revealed
Google's new low-cost smartphone, the Pixel 8a, is due to debut at the Google I/O conference on 14 May. Despite the fact that the official presentation is still more than a week away, the leak reveals all the detailed specifications and price of the novelty.
Here's What We Know
As you would expect, there are a lot of similarities between the Pixel 8a and its predecessor. In addition, the Pixel 8a has borrowed some features from the flagships of the Pixel 8 lineup.
The Pixel 8a will have up to 256GB of inbuilt storage, which is double what Google offered in the Pixel 7a. The display's refresh rate will increase to 120Hz and peak brightness will increase to 2,000 nits (1,400 nits HDR). The rest of the display specs are the same. It is a 6.1-inch OLED screen with FHD+ resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection and HDR support.
The battery capacity will also increase slightly. While the Pixel 7a has a typical battery capacity of 4385 mAh and a minimum capacity of 4300 mAh, the Pixel 8a has these numbers increased to 4492 mAh and 4404 mAh respectively. Meanwhile, both models have the same battery life of around 24 hours or up to 72 hours in Extreme Battery Saver mode. The phone will also continue to support Qi wireless charging.
The camera specs will remain unchanged from the Pixel 7a, but there will be some new features, like the AI-powered Magic Editor, Best Take and Ultra HDR, and Audio Magic Eraser for video - another feature that Google introduced with the Pixel 8 series.
Like the Pixel 8 flagships, the new Pixel 8 will receive OS updates and security patches for 7 years. It's worth noting that the 7 years starts from the moment the device first appears in the Google Store in the US. Not from the moment you buy the smartphone.
The Pixel 8a will be available in four colours and will retain the price of the Pixel 7a - $499 for the 128GB variant and $559 for the 256GB variant.
