"Doctor Who" returns in triumph for the first time in more than a decade: New season with Nkuti Gatwa gets 100 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes
The fresh season of Doctor Who, described as the first season in a new cycle under returning showrunner Russell T. Davies, has radically changed the franchise's fortunes, delivering the first perfect season on Rotten Tomatoes in a decade.
Here's What We Know
The season starring Ncuti Gatwa received the highest rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
The last time a Doctor Who project started with a 100% rating from critics was in season seven, when Matt Smith played the role of the Doctor. After Smith's departure, the show faced a crisis, budget cuts and produced several episodes that didn't live up to the high standards of previous seasons.
But judging by critics, the new season revives the show's former power and is off to a rave review. It is especially praised for the choice of Gatva for the lead role, his extraordinary energy and the return of Davis as showrunner.
It is noted that Gatwa impressed critics with his flamboyant charisma and "expressive" appearance, giving the role a dynamic feel.
Variety 's Aramide Tinubu notes:
"t’s Gatwa’s star turn that elevates the season. With his megawatt smile and colorful costumes, he dives into the role, delivering a refreshing dynamism that makes the season a uniquely mesmerizing watch"
The rest of the reviews are roughly in the same vein.
When We Can Expect It
"Doctor Who" will debut on Disney+ in the US on 10 May and on the BBC on 11 May.
