Robotic dogs with automatic rifles are being evaluated by the US Marine Corps Special Forces
The US Naval Special Operations Force (MARSOC) is currently evaluating a new generation of robotic 'dogs' developed by Ghost Robotics. These robots can be equipped with weapon systems from defence technology company Onyx Industries.
Here's What We Know
MARSOC is testing Ghost Robotics' four-legged unmanned ground vehicles (Q-UGVs) for a variety of missions, including reconnaissance and surveillance. However, the greatest interest may be in the possibility of arming them with weapons for remote interaction.
The weapon systems are based on Onyx's SENTRY remote weapon system, which features an AI-enabled digital imaging system that can automatically detect and track people, drones or vehicles, reporting potential targets to a remote operator who can be located anywhere in the world.
The system supports human control in the decision cycle and cannot make a firing decision on its own. MARSOC currently has two armed Q-UGVs undergoing testing, as confirmed by Onyx Industries personnel.
MARSOC clarifies that armed robotic dogs are just one of many use cases they are evaluating. The team stresses that it is aware of and adheres to all Department of Defence policies regarding autonomous weapons.
