Canada to provide $55 million for Ukrainian air defence
During a meeting with German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in Ottawa, Canada's Minister of National Defence Bill Blair announced the allocation of USD 55 million to support Ukraine under Germany's Immediate Action on Air Defence initiative (IAAD).
Here's What We Know
The initiative, launched by Germany in April 2024, aims to pool money and resources from the international community to quickly find and deliver air defence systems to Ukraine. The Western community is committed to protecting Ukraine from Russian air attacks that have caused numerous casualties and destroyed homes and infrastructure.
Ministers Blair and Pistorius stressed the importance of working together to support Ukraine and strengthen defence within NATO.
In addition, both leaders reaffirmed their intention to continue working together on common priorities ahead of the NATO Summit in Washington this summer.
Canada's pledges represent just one way that Canada and Germany are working together to support Ukraine in times of war. Canada's previous investments in support of Ukraine already exceed $14 billion, which includes military assistance, as well as technical and humanitarian aid.
On 27 April, Canada allocated more than $2 million for the production of Ukrainian drones. In the summer, the global partner will start delivering 450 SkyRanger multi-purpose UAVs to Ukraine.
