The Strong Museum's Video Game Hall of Fame has a new addition, with Asteroids, Myst, Resident Evil, SimCity and Ultima taking their rightful place among the industry's most significant games

The National Museum of The Strong in New York has announced the five games that will take a place of honour in the Video Game Hall of Fame.

Here's What We Know

Every year, a strict jury chooses the best interactive entertainment from thousands of applicants and in 2024, Asteroids, Myst, Resident Evil, SimCity and Ultima took their place among the most significant games in the history of the industry.

This jury's choice is explained as follows:

Asteroids (1979)

Through countless variants and remakes for dozens of arcade, home, handheld and mobile platforms, Asteroids went from a simple but complex game about exploding rocks to one of the most popular and influential video games of all time.

Myst (1993)

Few other games can match Myst's ability to present imaginary worlds. It was a work of artistic genius that captured the minds of an entire generation of gamers, and its influence can be seen in many modern open-world games.

Resident Evil (1996)

The combination of corny B-movie dialogue, addictive gameplay, and chilling suspense made Resident Evil a favorite among gamers looking for more mature video games, and helped create one of gaming's most enduring franchises.

SimCity (1989)

Simulators are one of the oldest forms of video games, but few have as much popularity, influence, and staying power as SimCity. At a time when many people thought of video games as arcade shooters or console platformers, SimCity appealed to gamers who wanted more sophisticated entertainment on their newly purchased personal computers.

Ultima (1981)

Ultima helped define the genre of computer role-playing games. Although it did not become a household name, the game and the series it spawned became legendary among RPG developers and fans worldwide.

Elite, Guitar Hero, Metroid, Neopets, Tokimeki Memorial, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and You Don't Know Jack have all been contenders for induction into the Video Game Hall of Fame.

Flashback

Games are chosen based on a variety of criteria, including cultural impact, significance to the industry, fame and popularity.

A strict jury of thousands of candidates leaves the most worthy interactive entertainment.

Don't be surprised that the list of annual nominees does not include modern blockbusters, as it is extremely difficult to assess their impact on the industry at the moment. "The beautiful is seen at a distance" - this is the principle that guides the jury of the Hall of Fame and replenishes the collection even with arcade machines, which have long been out of favour, although they were a real breakthrough in their time - that's why they are in the Hall.
