Germany has banned sales of Lenovo and Motorola smartphones, tablets and other gadgets due to a legal dispute

Lenovo and its subsidiary Motorola Mobility are facing a serious legal challenge in Germany.

US technology company InterDigital has sued Lenovo. It holds patents on technology that is used in the manufacturer's devices. It has to do with WWAN modules, which are essential for mobile internet connectivity. WWAN modules are used in many Lenovo gadgets, including the recently released Motorola Edge 50 Ultra smartphone.

The companies have been at odds over the fees Lenovo has to pay to use the technology. InterDigital claims that Lenovo has not paid the fee, and Lenovo, in turn, argues that InterDigital's terms are unfair.

In early May, the Munich District Court ruled in favour of InterDigital. According to the ruling, Lenovo is banned from selling, offering or importing any WWAN-enabled devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptops that use mobile networks such as GSM, UMTS, LTE and 5G. This not only affects Motorola smartphones, but also a wider range of Lenovo mobile devices.

The company has already removed the affected products from its German websites, but retailers still have stock of the gadgets.
