Elite US units test armed "robot dogs"
The US Naval Special Operations Command (MARSOC) is testing "robot dogs" equipped with rifles.
Here's What We Know
The systems are based on the Vision 60 quadrupedal unmanned ground vehicle (Q-UGV). It is a medium-sized ground drone developed by the Philadelphia-based Ghost Robotics.
The Ministry of Defence has been testing the Q-UGV for several years, using artificial intelligence and data analytics to identify potential threats. But now MARSOC seems to want to add offensive capabilities to the robot.
The "robot dogs" can be used for a variety of tasks, including tunnelling and perimeter security.
The Vision 60 is known to be lightweight and compact, allowing it to move easily on the ground and perform tasks for long periods of time. The drones are equipped with artificial intelligence that helps them adapt to different conditions and tasks.
In recent years, the US Department of Defence has been testing Vision 60: participants noted its ease of operation and reliability. However, some problems have been identified with keeping the drone upright on slippery surfaces, as well as with selecting the optimal operating modes for different conditions.
