Sony Xperia 1 VI unveiled: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 1-120Hz LTPO display, improved sound and 7.1x optical zoom camera
After many rumours and leaks, Sony has officially unveiled its flagship Xperia 1 VI and it looks like an improved Xperia 1 V formula.
Here's What We've Seen
The biggest change is the ditching of the standard 4K OLED screen in a cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio in favour of a more traditional 19.5:9 panel with a resolution of 2340x1080. The diagonal is still 6.5 inches, but with the new aspect ratio, the screen appears visually larger. The display has a brightness of up to 1300 nits and has an LTPO panel from 1 to 120Hz, while the Xperia 1 V screen worked in 60Hz and 120Hz mode. Also the screen of the novelty has a modern display technology inherited from the Bravia 9 TV, which improves contrast, colour and clarity of the display.
As expected, Xperia 1 VI received the latest to date flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip from Qualcomm, as well as 12GB of RAM. Residents of Europe will be able to get models with 256GB of storage, while buyers in Japan and East Asia will get a 512GB version. The smartphone will reportedly feature a large evaporation chamber for improved processor cooling.
Both sides of the phone are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus glass. The screen is protected by the second generation Victus 2 protection, while the back panel is protected by the first generation Victus. The rear glass is textured with a matte finish like the previous model. Textured stripes are cut across the entire aluminium frame, just like the Xperia 1 V.
In terms of cameras, the Xperia 1 VI gets a 48-megapixel 1/1.35-inch main camera with 24mm focal length and f/1.9 aperture, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture, 16mm focal length and PDAF, and an improved telephoto camera with optical zoom up to 7.1x is also available. The front camera will be placed still the same, in the top bezel above the display.
The good news for music lovers is that the Xperia 1 VI gets louder and more balanced front-facing stereo speakers with reduced distortion, while the 3.5mm headphone jack features a new Premium Audio Circuit for improved output.
Sony claims that the Xperia 1 VI will feature a 5000mAh battery that will last two days, and a large evaporation chamber in the body will allow for better heat dissipation during fast charging. The battery will be able to charge up to 50% in 30 minutes with a 30W charger and retain at least 80% of its capacity after 4 years of use thanks to Battery Care and Xperia Adaptive Charging technologies.
The new Xperia 1 VI runs Android 14 and will receive three Android version updates and four years of security updates. The case will be available in three colours - Black, Platinum Silver and Khaki Green.
Price & When We Can Expect It
The Xperia 1 VI will be available for purchase from the beginning of June for a price of around €1,399.
