PlayStation 5 sales in the US outpace PS4, PS3 and PS1 sales, but lag behind PS2, the best-selling console in history
We wrote that 20.8 million units of PlayStation 5 were sold in the last fiscal year, bringing the total number of sales to 59 million. And thanks to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, we learned how the PS5 compares to previous Sony consoles.
Here's What We Know
PlayStation 5 is 41 months old. As of today, PS5 sales in the US are 7% ahead of PS4, 66% ahead of PS3, and 30% ahead of PS1, but 14% behind PS2. However, given that the PS2 is the best-selling console in history, it is difficult for anyone to compete with it.
In general, 2023 was the peak year for the PS5, although the best year may still be ahead. But Xbox has not had the best period lately. It is worth reminding that in the period from January to March 2024, not even one million Xbox Series units were shipped, which is almost 5 times less than Sony.
