South Korea wants European arms market: Romania is the first to respond
South Korea continues to actively expand its presence in the European arms market, especially in Romania, which has ordered K9 self-propelled artillery systems and K2 tanks.
Here's What We Know
In particular, Hyundai Rotem's K2 has recently undergone demonstration firing at a Romanian training ground. This demonstrates Romania's serious interest in Korean military equipment, which means that new joint contracts may soon be signed.
Given that Bucharest began to show interest in this vehicle as early as 2022, these demonstration trials indicate that the contract is already close to being signed.
Romania's choice in favour of K2 tanks has rational reasons, particularly in terms of cost savings, given the high price of US Abrams tanks. In addition, Romania will become the new operator of the Korean K9 self-propelled gun system. Although the contract has not yet been signed, Hanwha is the only bidder for the supply of 54 artillery systems, which, according to preliminary information, will cost the country $751 million.
Romania is also considering the purchase of IFVs, in particular, the AS21 Redback, which could make it the first operator of this equipment in Europe.
South Korea has the advantage of being able to deliver quickly, thanks to its strong defence industry and flexible production. They actively offer high technology and a willingness to transfer knowledge and technology, which provide them with a competitive advantage in the defence equipment market.
