South Korea worried about North Korea testing ballistic missiles
The South Korean military reported that North Korea had tested short-range ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan.
Here's What We Know
The missiles were equipped with a "new autonomous navigation system", and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un watched the test launch and vowed to strengthen the country's nuclear capabilities.
In a brief statement, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launches were carried out from the Wonsan region on North Korea's east coast. According to them, the tests of "several flying objects are likely to be short-range ballistic missiles". The missiles were said to have travelled about 300 km before landing in the waters between South Korea and Japan.
The missile launches took place immediately after two South Korean F-35As and two US F-22 Raptors conducted air exercises over the central region of South Korea. Such exercises have angered North Korea, which sees them as a rehearsal for an invasion.
Although the South Korean military did not specify the latter type of weapon, North Korean propaganda media reported that its military was testing multiple launch rocket systems, which are being modernised.
