Russia's S-400 air defence system "fails" in battles, as even old Western weapons can defeat it

The effectiveness of the best air defence system in the Russian army in the war against Ukraine has shown that it is vulnerable even to some old Western missiles, so this could give the West new ideas on how to defeat a potential enemy.

Here's What We Know

Russia's S-400 is considered one of the world's most advanced air defence systems, but during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, several units were destroyed, including with the help of older Western weapons that this system should have been able to easily handle.

Experts told Business Insider that the system is indeed powerful and technologically advanced, but it has some weaknesses that Ukraine has exploited.

Fredrik Mertens, an analyst at the Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, said that "we know clearly that Ukrainian missiles are coming in and at such a rate that they are really a problem for the Russians."

Flashback

The S-400 Triumph system, or SA-21 Growler as NATO calls it, is a mobile long-range ground-based missile system and the successor to the older S-300 system. "The Triumph was designed to operate against aircraft and missiles, but it can also be used for surface-to-surface missile attacks. The system was first used in 2007 and has since been considered the equivalent of the US Patriot system. Russia uses the C-400 to strike Ukrainian cities.
