Hungary hints it may buy Gripen-E from Sweden

Hungary has expressed interest in purchasing the latest version of the Swedish Saab Gripen fighter jet, the Gripen-E. Negotiations on this agreement between the countries are already underway

Here's What We Know

Janes reported that Hungary is in talks with Sweden to add Gripen E warplanes to its current Gripen C/D fleet, quoting a senior Saab official.

Osa Tägström, Vice President and Deputy Head of Aeronautics at Saab, announced that talks are already underway to sell the latest Gripen E to the Hungarian Air Force (HuAF). The Eastern European country already operates Gripen C/D aircraft.

In 2001, Hungary leased the Gripen C/D variant from Saab, which was eventually adopted in 2006. In addition, in February of this year, on the eve of Sweden's ratification of NATO membership, Hungary announced an agreement to purchase four Saab JAS Gripen fighters.

Flashback

The Swedish Gripen-E, manufactured by Saab, is a fourth-generation multi-role fighter aircraft. Designed to replace older Gripen models, it is equipped with modern technologies, including AESA radar, electronic warfare system and advanced avionics. The aircraft has an increased range, greater payload and improved manoeuvrability. The Gripen-E is capable of performing a wide range of missions, from air combat to ground strikes and reconnaissance. Thanks to its modular design, the aircraft can be easily upgraded to meet modern requirements and threats. It is actively exported and used by the Swedish and other air forces.
