The US is still considering giving Ukraine permission to use US weapons against Russia

Earlier, the US banned Ukraine from striking targets in Russia with US weapons, but discussions are ongoing between officials in Washington to allow Ukraine to defend itself against the enemy.

Here's What We Know

The New York Times reported on Thursday that US officials are discussing the cancellation of the rule, which Ukraine has argued seriously hinders its ability to defend itself.

This is likely to have come after Russia launched a new offensive in the Kharkiv sector. Ukraine was forced to watch as the Russians amassed weapons on the border, as it did not have the necessary weapons to launch a preemptive strike. Ukraine sometimes used only non-U.S. drones.

The Times reported that this proposal is still being discussed and has not yet been formally proposed to President Joe Biden. Analysts say the policy change could give Ukraine a decisive advantage in the fight against Russia.

By the way, some US allies, such as the UK, have already lifted restrictions on the use of their weapons to hit targets in Russia. However, there are fears that Russia could respond to such steps, for example, by striking the United States or one of its allies, leading to a nuclear war.

Ukraine has repeatedly ignored US warnings about a potential escalation of the conflict, attacking Crimea, which is temporarily occupied by Russia, or launching drones that flew deep into Russia. Yet the Russians have not responded to these moves with a large-scale escalation, so perhaps this will convince the US to authorise a strike against Russia.
