Northrop Grumman unveils Glide Phase Interceptor model to intercept Russian and Chinese hypersonic missiles

The United States and Japan are jointly trying to create a new-generation missile interceptor capable of intercepting Chinese and Russian hypersonic weapons. A graphic model of the anti-missile missile was presented by Northrop Grumman.

Here's What We Know

The new interceptor is called Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI). Northrop Grumman demonstrated how the anti-missile will look like. The US defence company is responsible for building guidance and communication systems, as well as detection sensors. Japan will work on engines for the first and second stages of the anti-aircraft missile.

The two countries previously signed an agreement under which the GPI is expected to be completed by the 2030s. The next-generation missile interceptor project is estimated at more than $3 billion. Japan will invest nearly $500 million in the programme in the current fiscal year.

Glide Phase Intercept is designed to destroy hypersonic weapons in the planning phase, which is when the missile is outside the atmosphere. This is the longest phase of flight. The interceptor will be integrated into the ship's Mk.41 VLS vertical launch systems and the Aegis and Baseline 9 system.
