The popular YouTube channel ToastedShoes, which made funny content with Mortal Kombat mods, had to remove the video due to a complaint from Warner Brothers
ToastedShoes is a large YouTube channel with more than 800 thousand subscribers. The channel's creator often posted funny videos with Mortal Kombat mods featuring various characters such as SpongeBob or Shrek. However, this is not funny for Warner Bros., which owns the Mortal Kombat franchise.
Here's What We Know
The author of the channel reported that he received a notice of intellectual property rights infringement directly from Warner Brothers, which states that the Mortal Kombat mods in the video "infringe" intellectual property rights. The author was asked to remove all Mortal Kombat 1 videos from the channel, otherwise the channel would be deleted.
Even Ed Boon, the co-founder of MK, shared and distributed videos with fighting game mods. In total, ToastedShoes' mod videos have more than 1 billion views across all platforms, which has helped to draw attention to the game and continue to support the development team with which the author works. His team of modders works both part-time and full-time, and the revenue from these videos pays their salaries.
The author could not respond to an email sent to ToastedShoes directly from Warner Brothers. So he has no way of contacting Warner Brothers or asking what exactly the company considers to be copyright infringement.
Because of all this, ToastedShoes is forced to remove all videos from his Mortal Kombat fashion channel. The author himself asks to share his post to attract the attention of Warner Bros.
