Apple Hearing Study: 15% of people experience daily tinnitus
In its latest research, the Apple Hearing Study has drawn attention to the prevalence of tinnitus among people. According to the study, 15% of people experience tinnitus on a daily basis, which has a significant impact on their daily lives.
Here's What We Know
Conducted in conjunction with the University of Michigan, the study covered more than 160,000 participants and showed that 77.6% of respondents had ever experienced tinnitus. The researchers stressed the importance of understanding these trends to reduce the associated risks.
Older people are more likely to experience tinnitus on a daily basis, with those over 55 being three times more likely to experience it compared to younger people aged 18 to 34. Men were also more likely to experience tinnitus: 2.7% more men experienced tinnitus on a daily basis, but 4.8% more men said they had never experienced it.
To cope with tinnitus, 28% of respondents used noise machines, 23.7% listened to nature sounds, and 12.2% practiced meditation. Less than 2.1% used cognitive behavioural therapy.
Noise trauma caused 20.3% of cases, and stress caused 7.7%. Most people have short-term episodes rather than permanent problems.
The Apple Hearing Study uses data collected through the iPhone Research app, which collects information about environmental sound levels and lifestyle. The data will be shared with the World Health Organization as part of the Make Listening Safe initiative.
