German Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet damaged after colliding with a drone
German police reported this week that a Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet was damaged in a collision with a drone. The incident took place on 22 May 2022.
The German military aircraft collided with the drone in Bavaria on approach at Manching Airport. It is near Ingolstadt, where Airbus assembles fighter jets.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident as the drone's appearance near the airport violates the Aviation Safety Act. The extent of damage to the Eurofighter Typhoon has not been specified, but law enforcement officials say the crash did not endanger the pilot's life.
Despite their compact size, UAVs pose a danger to aircraft. A UAV hitting an engine can lead to a catastrophic scenario, especially during the takeoff or landing phase.
