iPhone sales in China increased in April after massive discounts from Apple
A report from the China Academy of Information and Communication Technology (CAICT) shows that shipments of foreign-branded smartphones rose 52% in April. Most of these phones are Apple devices.
Here's What We Know
This is a marked recovery from a 37% drop in the first two months of 2024. Despite pessimistic forecasts at the time, Apple's figures showed a positive trend.
The main reason for this growth was the large discounts from Apple, 2300 yuan ($320) for certain models. These promotions are likely to continue to drive iPhone sales in May.
The massive discounts started after Huawei launched its Pura 70 series in the local market. Huawei has overtaken Apple and is now the second largest smartphone brand in China after Honor, a former Huawei subsidiary.
In April this year, 3.495 million foreign-branded smartphones were sold in China, up from 2.301 million in April last year.
In total, 22.7 million smartphones were bought in April, up 25.5% year-on-year.
Sales of the iPhone 15 series in China were weaker than the iPhone 14. However, as the iPhone 16 is approaching, the new series is expected to bring a number of improvements.
