Netflix plans to add HDR switcher to its Android app

Netflix may soon introduce a new tool to its Android app that will allow users to switch between HDR and SDR video formats.

Here's What We Know

The innovation may be a response to problems with HDR playback. Some models of Samsung Galaxy S24 smartphones have been experiencing a number of display issues, such as poor colour reproduction and blurred content at low brightness.

While other platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and HBO don't have similar capabilities, Netflix seems to be actively considering this option. App researcher AssembleDebug has found clues in the code of the latest beta version of the Netflix Android app that indicate an HDR toggle switch is in the works.

This initiative could not only make it easier to watch content on certain devices, but also reduce data usage and power consumption. In addition, users will have more control and will be able to choose between SDR and HDR formats, depending on their preferences.

The exact timing of the update is unknown.
