Approximately half of all Sony game users are PlayStation 4 owners
Past generations of consoles often remain active even after their successors have been released, but the four-year gap between the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series generations is still long: Sony co-founders Hideaki Nishino and Hermen Hulst have said that 50% of the 97 million active PlayStation users are using the latest generation hardware, with PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 each having around 49 million users.
Here's What We Know
"The PlayStation 5 userbase has continued to grow significantly, driving to half of our monthly active consoles. While the PlayStation 4 is still an important part of our business, our PlayStation 5 players are even more engaged than in our previous generation, and we expect these trends to continue."
The PlayStation 4's strong performance shows its continued importance to Sony, but that could change. With the potential release of the PlayStation 5 Pro and fewer cross-generational games, users are likely to lean more towards the PlayStation 5.
As of 31 March, the PlayStation 5 had sold more than 59.3 million units worldwide, making it Sony's most profitable console generation.
