Iraq may purchase $2.56bn worth of Korean M-SAM-II systems instead of Russian S-400 Triumf systems
Iraq may purchase South Korean M-SAM-II medium-range air defence systems. This means that in this case Russia will be left behind with its S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems.
Here's What We Know
In early 2020, a member of the security and defence committee reported that Iraq was discussing the purchase of S-400 Triumf missile systems. Now the media has reported that Baghdad will order South Korean M-SAM-II systems.
The air defence systems in Block II configuration will cost Iraq $2.56 billion. If the agreement is signed, it will be the third M-SAM-II export contract for the Republic of Korea.
Great news.

The two current operators are Saudi Arabia and the UAE. They spent approximately $3.2bn and $3.5bn respectively on the purchase of the M-SAM-II.
The South Korean air defence system provides protection against aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles. In addition to the launchers, the system includes an advanced radar station capable of identifying and tracking multiple targets.
M-SAM-II uses hit-to-kill missile interceptors. The technology allows airborne threats to be hit with kinetic energy, minimising collateral damage.
