X has new rules that now officially allow adult content
Social network X, formerly known as Twitter, has updated its terms of service, thereby officially authorising the publication of adult content. Under the new rules, users can share material containing nudity or sexual behaviour, provided that such content is produced and shared by mutual consent of the parties and labelled accordingly. However, profile images and banners must remain free of such content.
Here's What We Know
X has not banned pornographic content in the past, which attracted adult content creators (NSFW) after the introduction of the paid X Premium subscription. Now, NSFW content could become a new revenue stream for the platform, especially in light of declining ad revenue following the platform's acquisition by Ilon Musk.
Users who regularly post adult content will have to change their account settings to mark their postings as private content. The new rules apply to all adult content, including that created with artificial intelligence, photographic or animated content. By default, underage users or those who have not provided a date of birth will not be able to view NSFW content. In addition, content that may advocate exploitation or harm to minors will also be banned.
These changes come amidst problems other social platforms have had with maintaining NSFW communities. For example, Tumblr banned adult content in 2018, leading to a sharp drop in traffic. Payment processors have also started imposing restrictions on transactions with sites that publish such content, forcing many platforms to tighten their rules.
