Hidetaka Miyazaki explains what to expect from the open world in Shadow of the Erdtree for Elden Ring

FromSoftware studio announced a long time ago that Shadow of the Erdtree add-on for Elden Ring will be the largest DLC among all their projects, and its passing will take 30-40 hours.

Japanese developers did not follow the way of most of their colleagues, betting on the size of the map. Instead FromSoftware concentrated on making several complex and interesting locations - this was told by gamemdirector Hidetaka Miyazaki.

Here's What We Know

In an interview with PC Gamer, Miyazaki explained that his team's goal was to get gamers excited about exploration and a sense of epic adventure, similar to what they experienced at the beginning of Elden Ring.

The Japanese game designer explained that although the map in Shadow of the Erdtree will be relatively small, gamers will find something interesting, surprising and entertaining in each of the locations. FromSoftware tried to fill every corner of Shadow of the Erdtree with unique content.

We wanted the Shadow of the Erdtree map to have the same sense of scale as the base game. We wanted the player to experience that sense of discovery, wonder, and exploration again. We needed a map that supported this effect, the ratio of dungeons to open fields and how they intertwine.

This is something we wanted to reimagine anew in the DLC: the same sense of scale, but with a different level of detail.

When We Can Expect It

Shadow of the Erdtree will release on 21 June on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam).
