The first domestic one: Turkey starts mass production of Altay battle tanks

Turkey has begun mass production of the Altay, the first domestic main battle tank, under the supervision of the Defence Industry Agency (SSB).

The tanks are equipped with a fire control system that includes a laser rangefinder and an advanced image stabilisation system, which increases the tank's ability to fire accurately at long range.

In addition, the Altay features hybrid composite armour and an active protection system that provides lightweight, resilient protection that can actively counter guided missiles and other anti-tank weapons.

SSB President Haluk Görgün said that Altay's production underlines Turkey's strength in ground vehicle production.

"We are very strong as a country in the ground vehicle industry. We have several companies that export abroad. All their products have advantages that can compete with their global counterparts," he said.

According to the plan, Altai will be fully operational by 2025.

The tank is named after Turkish military general Fahretin Altay, a participant in the Turkish War of Independence. The tank's prototype was the Korean K2 Black Panther. The Altay is equipped with modern defence systems, such as an active protection system, a powerful engine, and advanced electronics. The main gun of 120 mm calibre allows it to effectively destroy armoured targets. The tank also has a high level of mobility and protection against mines and improvised explosive devices.
