YouTube introduces restrictions on viewing firearms videos for under 18s
Video hosting YouTube has changed its policy on the distribution of content related to firearms. From 18 June this year, videos showing homemade or automatic weapons, as well as certain accessories to them, will be available only to users over 18 years of age. Also completely banned are videos that explain how to bypass safety devices from firearms.
Here's What We Know
The restrictions apply solely to content about real guns and do not apply to video games, films and other forms of artistic creation. Exceptions are possible for educational content deemed of public interest, such as military training films, news stories, or videos from war zones.
The policy update comes after watchdog group Tech Transparency Project raised concerns that YouTube's algorithm was recommending violent weapons-related content, including weapons modification tutorials, to underage users.
Tech Transparency Project emphasises the importance of strictly enforcing YouTube's new rules. They see this as a step in the right direction, but point out the need for effective content controls to protect young viewers from potentially harmful gun-related content.
