Google introduces new RCS feature for 911 text messages in US emergencies
Google has announced a partnership with emergency services company RapidSOS to extend its 911 text messaging capabilities to Android users in the US.
Here's What We Know
The new feature, which uses the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol, will allow device owners to request help by sending text messages in emergency situations when they are unable to call.
This initiative empowers Android users by enabling them to send accurate location information and even high quality photos and videos to emergency services.
This option is planned to be available to Android device owners in the US via Google Messages and later on iPhone.
In winter 2024, the ability to send 911 text messages via RCS will be available to emergency call centres across the United States.
