US conducts second test of Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile in a week
The United States has tested its Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) to test its nuclear deterrent capabilities.
Here's What We Know
The first test, which took place on 4 June, involved the launch of an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. According to the US Air Force Global Strike Command, the purpose of the test launch was to "verify the safety, security, effectiveness and readiness of the weapon system".
Two days later, another Minuteman III was launched from the same location, flying approximately 6,759 kilometres to the Ronald Reagan Missile Defense Range in the Marshall Islands.
The tests were reportedly intended to demonstrate that the US nuclear programme is reliable and effective in deterring modern threats.
"These tests are not only critical to our nation's defence, but also a key moment in demonstrating the exceptional capabilities and expertise of our dedicated team," said Colonel Brian Titus, Space Launch Delta 30 vice commander.
