Blackmagic Design creates camera for Apple Vision Pro 3D content

Blackmagic Design aims to be the leader in video creation for Apple Vision Pro by introducing an innovative workflow for capturing and editing Apple Immersive Video content. Apple Vision Pro is capable of playing back footage created using Apple Immersive Video, a standard that combines 8K 3D video with a 180-degree viewing angle and support for spatial audio.

Here's What We Know

To meet these requirements, Blackmagic Design has developed the world's first commercial camera and editing software system compatible with Apple Immersive Video.

The system consists of the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera, which has a special stereoscopic lens pre-installed. The camera sensor is capable of capturing 8160 x 7200 resolution per eye with pixel-level sync and 16-step dynamic range. Video can be captured at up to 90 frames per second, saving stereoscopic video in a single file along with the lens data.

The camera body is made of magnesium alloy and a carbon fibre and polycarbonate composite shell for strength and lightness. In addition to the 5-inch HDR folding touchscreen and external colour LCD, a second 5-inch HDR touchscreen has been added to minimise the need for external monitors.

Connections include 12G-SGI, 10G Ethernet, USB-C, XLR audio, and an 8-pin Lemo connector that provides 24V and 12V power. The camera also comes with a 250 V power supply.

Here's How It Works

Recording is done on 8TB of high-performance network storage that connects to the Blackmagic Media Module and syncs to Blackmagic Cloud. This is enough capacity to record more than 2 hours of Blackmagic RAW 8K stereoscopic video that editors can access remotely during the shoot.

The Blackmagic RAW footage is then imported into DaVinci Resolve, which will be updated to support Apple's Immersive Video workflow. Video can be edited from the camera file and viewed on 2D monitors using the new Video Viewer.

Updates to Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive and DaVinci Resolve will be available later in 2024 from authorised Blackmagic Design dealers.
