"This is Sparta!" - DOOM: The Dark Ages developers told about the main features of the new shooter and sources of inspiration
The other day the Gamers are thrilled with the debut trailer of DOOM: The Dark Ages - the video received a huge number of likes and positive comments with the subtitle The Dark Ages took place.
The shooter will be a prequel to the previous two games of the series and is characterised by an unusual setting: instead of super-technological Martian complexes and destroyed Earth, gamers will be offered a dark fantasy with elements of medieval gothic. Doom Slayer wears a fur cloak, fights with a shield and flies on a dragon.
Although this transition looks very organic, it surprised DOOM fans.
DOOM: The Dark Ages development managers Hugo Martin and Marty Stratton explained how the game will change and told about the sources of inspiration.
Here's What We Know
Of course, the main source of inspiration was the first parts of DOOM, but the prototype for Executioner Rock was King Leonidas from the cult film "300 Spartans" and Aragorn from "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King). Leonidas, like the DOOM hero, fought with a huge shield and handled it with extreme dexterity and grace, but instead of a Spartan spear in the game will be a double-barrelled shotgun, which appeared in almost all parts of DOOM.
As for the gameplay of DOOM: The Dark Ages, it will be less vertical than in DOOM Eternal. The Dark Ages locations will feature less jumping and acrobatic skills, which should please many players, as not everyone appreciated the platforming elements in the 2020 game.
The developers cite the following comparison: in Eternal, the player felt like a fast fighter plane, whereas in DOOM: The Dark Ages he will become a powerful tank.
id Software aims to make the controls of The Dark Ages easier and more accessible than in Eternal, and to reduce the number of buttons required. The speed of the game will be reduced not only in the hero's actions, but also in the speed of enemies' projectiles.
DOOM: The Dark Ages will feature both traditional closed locations and spacious open arenas, but there will be no full-fledged open world in the game.
When We Can Expect It
DOOM: The Dark Ages is expected to release in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
