Two years of updates are planned for Starfield, as well as annual paid extensions
After a period of slow updates, Bethesda has recently picked up the pace for Starfield with major updates in May and June. More content, including the paid Shattered Space expansion pack, is also on the horizon. However, the frequency of future updates will vary.
Here's What We Know
In an interview with video blogger MrMattyPlays, Todd Howard said that Starfield is planning a second year of updates, but the timing will vary:
"The cadence of things is going to differ depending on the update that we’re doing and where our development lands. Sometimes you’ll have some shorter gaps, sometimes you’ll have bigger gaps between bigger updates.".
Howard explained that although the last updates were close in time, there will be a longer gap before the next one, and next year is expected to be even longer as the studio plans major updates. He stressed the importance of clear communication with the audience.
Bethesda's strategy for Starfield includes both free updates and paid expansions. In addition to Shattered Space, which is rumoured to be released in September, Bethesda is aiming for annual additions, with at least one more planned for next year.
Where To Play
