iOS 18 accelerates neural processing of iPhone 15 Pro Max by 25%

Early test results show that iOS 18 can significantly speed up the neural processing of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. A comparison of the Geekbench results of the iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 17.5.1 and iOS 18 shows a significant performance boost, even at this early stage of beta testing.

Here's What We Know

According to the general Geekbench data, the iPhone 15 Pro Max hardware already shows a significant speed improvement over its predecessor. However, the first results of testing the iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 18, in particular its neural processor, show that the device can be even faster.

As initially noted in the X/Twitter thread, the performance is impressive. They are also confirmed by the results published on the Geekbench website.

Flashback

Neural cores are specialised processors that are designed to accelerate machine learning tasks such as image recognition, speech processing, and artificial intelligence.

For example, the iPhone 15 Pro Max running on iOS 17.5.1 scored 6249 on Geekbench 6, focusing on neural processing. The same device updated to iOS 18 scored 7816 points in the same test.

It is important to note that evaluations and specifications do not always accurately reflect the actual performance in everyday use. This statement becomes even more relevant when it comes to tests specifically designed to measure machine learning performance.

Nevertheless, the results clearly demonstrate that iOS 18 is better at optimising iPhone neural cores than iOS 17.
