Ukraine to use artificial intelligence to defuse Russian booby-trapped areas
Ukraine, which is facing a huge number of Russian mines, has started using artificial intelligence to identify priority demining zones. According to research, it could take up to 700 years to completely clear mined territory.
Here's What We Know
Ukrainian scientists have turned to artificial intelligence to identify priority demining zones in the country. The AI analyses extensive data, including tax records, maps of agricultural land, soil fertility information, military and emergency services reports on where bombs and shells have fallen, as well as information from satellite images and interviews with local residents and military personnel. Climate change models and population density data from mobile phone operators are also taken into account. The AI evaluates factors such as citizen safety and potential economic benefits to determine the importance of a particular piece of land and the urgency of its decontamination.
Ihor Bezkaravaynyy, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Economy, is leading the team working on this project. He compares the task of demining in the midst of an ongoing war to designing and building a submarine underwater, where the water is engulfed in flames. "It's a big challenge," Bezkaravainy says.
