Amazon fined nearly $6 million for violating California labour laws
Amazon has faced a $5,901,700 fine for violating California labour laws, the state labour commissioner's office said. The company did not properly inform warehouse workers about expected quotas, violating AB-701, a law aimed at protecting employees.
Here's What We Know
According to the California Labour Commissioner, Amazon failed to comply with the rules at two of its facilities in Moreno Valley and Redlands. This is one of the first major fines levied under AB-701, which came into effect in January 2022.
AB701 was passed in September 2021 and is a response to stories from Amazon employees about operational quotas that put them at risk of injury and other violations.
Amazon spokeswoman Maureen Lynch Vogel said the company had appealed the fines. She also emphasised that they do not have fixed quotas, and performance is assessed over a long period of time.
