Apple's new A18 Pro chip could surpass the Apple M4 and Snapdragon X Elite in AI performance
Apple is preparing to release a new iPhone 16 series, which will be powered by the A18 Pro chipset and promises to surpass even professional iPad Pro tablets in terms of AI performance.
Here's What We Know
The new iPhones 16 are expected to feature the A18 Pro chipset, which will significantly improve AI capabilities thanks to a powerful neural processing unit (NPU). Specifically, the NPU inside the A18 Pro is allegedly more powerful than the one used in the latest iPad Pro with the M4 chipset. If rumours are to be believed, the A18 Pro's NPU is capable of achieving 45 TOPS performance, which is significantly higher than the current Apple M4 and A17 Pro chips from the iPhone 15 series, which have 38 and 35 TOPS performance respectively, and could also exceed the NPU in Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite.
For comparison, last year's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 offers an NPU performance of 15 TOPS. How much Qualcomm will improve the AI performance results in Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will be revealed when the chip is unveiled in October.
Apple is focusing on integrating AI into its devices and the new chipset is a clear indication of that. The iOS 18 system apps and Siri voice assistant already include features developed under the name Apple Intelligence. iOS 18 now requires a chipset with a powerful NPU as Apple aims to integrate more artificial intelligence features into the iPhone.
