Steam has begun testing a new gameplay recording system that will capture all important game events so you can show off to your friends
We all want to capture a great gaming moment to show off to our friends, laugh, or just keep as a memory to look back on later. And Valve has started a beta test of a feature on Steam that will help you do just that.
Here's What We Know
Steam has started beta testing a new built-in system for recording and sharing gameplay.
According to Valve, there will be two modes: background recording and key press. In the background recording mode, your gameplay will be permanently saved to the selected disc, without exceeding the set limits for the recording duration and the allocated disc space. In push mode, Steam will only start recording when you press a hotkey. The feature is available in the Steam overlay for every game that supports it.
Along with it, there will be a simple clip editor to cut out everything you don't need and keep the part you're interested in. In games with timeline support, event tags are created when something relevant happens in the gameplay. They are also created when a player gets an achievement or takes a screenshot.
The clips are saved in MP4 format, so they can be easily transferred between devices, sent to friends, and uploaded to social networks. You can also create temporary Steam links to MP4 videos. This is very useful if you want to show a friend the moment, but they don't want to download something to their PC.
All of the above is fully compatible with Steam Deck.
To test all of this, you need to choose to participate in the beta testing of the Steam client. You can do this in Steam → Settings → Interface.
More details about the feature can be found at this link.
